Funding is now available to create additional housing units in downtown Beloit

Funding is now available to create additional housing units in downtown Beloit

Funding is now available to create additional housing units in downtown Beloit while preserving economic vitality and the historic culture of our community. The Downtown Upper Floor Housing grant program was authorized by the Beloit City Council on Monday, February 19. This program provides funding for downtown property owners to create housing space in the upper floors of eligible structures. This Downtown Beloit Association (DBA) program provides grant funding towards a percentage of the project and requires a match. A virtual information session about the funding opportunity will be held at 1pm Tuesday, March 12. To register, contact Downtown Beloit Association Executive Director Shauna El-Amin at shauna@downtownbeloit.com. Additional information on the grant program, project eligibility and the application can be found at www.beloitwi.gov/tifhousing.“The City of Beloit recognized the positive impact that downtown residents can have on the economic vitality of the downtown,” said Shauna El-Amin, executive director of Downtown Beloit Association (DBA). “This program will help improve our downtown while boosting the housing stock available in Beloit.”This program was introduced as the Beloit community faces a housing shortage in all levels of homes. The City of Beloit is investing nearly $12 million into projects that will help meet the community’s housing needs from affordable housing to executive-level housing. The investments are being funded by the city’s TIF Housing Fund, which is a unique opportunity to use tax increment from the city’s successful tax increment financing districts toward housing. “These one-time funds have the potential to create a tangible, positive impact on growing the number of residents in our community,” said Drew Pennington, City of Beloit economic development director. “Available housing for our current and future residents is one of the top concerns of our business community. As our employers attract quality candidates to the area, we want those employees to create their life in our city as residents of Beloit.”

Barbara Williams Hickman: A Legacy of Education and Leadership in Beloit

Barbara Williams Hickman's journey is one of remarkable achievement and dedication to education. Moving to Beloit at the age of 9, she began her educational path at Parker Elementary School, later graduating from Beloit Memorial High School in 1956.Following her passion for teaching, Barbara enrolled at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, where in 1960, she became the first African American female graduate, earning a Bachelor of Science degree. Returning to Beloit, Barbara started her career as a third-grade teacher at Parker Elementary, later teaching at Strong, Merrill, and Todd elementary schools. Her commitment to education led her to serve as the director of Title 1 programs for the district from 1968 to 1975.Continuing her educational journey, Mrs. Hickman pursued a Master of Science in Teaching at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, graduating in 1976. In 1975, she made history again by becoming the first African American principal in the School District of Beloit. Over the next 27 years, she served as principal at Merrill, Burdge, Converse, and Waterman elementary schools.Mrs. Hickman's impact on the Beloit school district is immeasurable. She taught, supervised, or administrated in almost every school in the district, retiring in 2002. Community Shoutouts by DeeDee

Thinking we will try something new... we thought we would start doing community shoutouts! This girl right here is what We call an OVERCOMER! She has always chatted with DeeDee about good times and battles she faced and hardships she had in high school which got her to the point of quitting school. She went out and worked whatever she could find. We hadn't seen her in quite a while and we were wondering what happened to this Precious young lady. Well, today she walked into the shop with a work uniform on and a Huge Smile on her face! She saw DeeDee and said"I was hoping you would be here today, I have so much to tell you! She went on to tell us she got her GED and is now an EMT for Lifeline Ambulance! Saying We are so PROUD of this young lady would be an understatement. It just shows ya that never giving up and going through life's ups and downs can be hard but, committing to Overcome and chase your Dreams is worth more than you know! We Love the relationships and many connections that have developed in this Cute, Cozy Coffee Shop. #BlessedBeyondMeasure2024 #deedees #coffeeshop
