Rebuilding Beloit: A New A&E Series Shines a Light on Local Transformation

Rebuilding Beloit: A New A&E Series Shines a Light on Local Transformation

A new national TV series is about to showcase something Beloit residents have known all along—this city is worth betting on.“Betting on Beloit” premieres Saturday, July 12, on A&E, with back-to-back episodes airing at noon and 12:30 p.m. The 12-episode series follows Diane Hendricks, one of America’s richest self-made women, and her daughter Konya Hendricks Schuh as they lead a team determined to restore some of Beloit’s most neglected homes into beautiful places for families to call their own.But this show isn’t just about flipping houses—it’s about revitalizing an entire community with heart, purpose, and vision.Diane Hendricks, co-founder of ABC Supply and owner of Hendricks Commercial Properties, has spent decades investing in Beloit. She and her late husband, Ken, didn’t just build a billion-dollar business; they made it their mission to lift the city that helped launch their dream. From reimagining factory buildings into creative spaces on the Ironworks campus, to creating new restaurants, hotels, a stadium, and riverwalk spaces, Hendricks’ fingerprints are all over Beloit’s resurgence. Her daughter, Konya Hendricks Schuh, is now carrying that legacy forward through a more personal mission. As the heart of this new series, Konya and her team at Beloit College Park LLC are working to transform some of Beloit’s oldest homes, especially those near the historic district by Beloit College, into showstoppers. We caught up with Konya before the new year to get a behind-the-scenes look at this exact project. You can check out that video here: 👉 Rebuilding Beloit One Home at a TimeIn the series trailer, Konya says, “Beloit has struggled, and our mission is to buy the worst houses on the block and rehab them so they’re absolute stunners.” It’s clear the goal is bigger than just beautifying buildings. This is about planting roots, creating opportunity, and bringing a sense of pride to every corner of the city. The team featured in the series includes Konya’s husband, Matt Schuh, a skilled plumbing contractor with experience in homebuilding, as well as project manager Pete Woodkey, who has worked with Corporate Contractors Inc. for nearly two decades. Also in the mix is Conor Fox, a realtor and nephew of Diane Hendricks, who is helping find the right buyers for these newly restored dream homes. Each house is remodeled by CCI, another Hendricks company, and they’ve already made impressive progress. Homes like 630 Park Ave, 721 Park Ave, and 722 Park Ave have sold for nearly half a million dollars or more, and several others on Wisconsin and Park Avenue are either listed or in the works. While the series will include plenty of familiar faces and Beloit landmarks, it also brings a rare behind-the-scenes look at the people doing the heavy lifting. The show was filmed throughout 2024 and highlights both the challenges and rewards of transforming real homes and the lives of the families who move into them. For those who have watched Beloit evolve over the past few decades, this series is a celebration of that journey. For those new to the story, “Betting on Beloit” is a front-row seat to what a small city can accomplish when people invest in it with passion and purpose.Catch the premiere on A&E July 12, and keep your eyes peeled—you just might recognize some of your favorite streets, buildings, and neighbors. This isn’t just another renovation show. It’s a love letter to a hometown and a reminder that real change starts right where you live.

The Ultimate Guide to Old Settlers Days in Rockton IL – Tips, Food, Music, and More

The Ultimate Guide to Old Settlers Days in Rockton IL – Tips, Food, Music, and More

Hey everyone it’s Oscar here with Stateline Buzz and today I want to give you the ultimate guide to Old Settlers Days also known as OSD in Rockton Illinois If you’re planning to go or just curious about what it’s all about I’m going to break down everything you need to know to have the best experience possible.Old Settlers Days is this amazing community festival with a ton of history behind it It’s been around since 1946 and has grown into a huge celebration that brings together families friends and people from all around the area Whether you’ve been before or this will be your first time I want to share some tips and tricks to help you get the most out of your visit.First up let’s talk about what you can expect when you get there The festival usually runs over several days and something is going on all day long You will find live music from local and regional bands great food vendors with all kinds of delicious treats arts and crafts booths where you can shop for unique handmade goods and plenty of fun activities especially for kids like rides and games. One of the highlights for me every year is the parade. It shows off the spirit of the community and is a perfect way to kick off the celebration. If you are coming with kids or just love a good parade, make sure you find a good spot early so you can see everything. Now if you’re wondering about food you are in for a treat Old Settlers Days has a huge variety of food vendors ranging from classic carnival fare like funnel cakes corn dogs and cotton candy to more hearty options like pulled pork sandwiches fried fish and grilled burgers Don’t forget to check out some local favorites too because this festival is a great chance to try something new and support local businesses. If you want to beat the lines, my tip is to come early or during off-peak times like mid-afternoon on weekdays. The festival can get pretty busy, especially on weekends and in the evenings when the music events kick off. So, planning can help you enjoy the food without the wait.Parking and getting around are other things you should know about. The fe. festival has several parking lots, but they do fill up fast, especially on big event days. The website recommends carpooling or even biking if you are nearby. That way, you can avoid the hassle of parking and maybe even catch some fresh air on the way. When it comes to tickets Old Settlers Days offers a few different options depending on what events you want to see Some are free and open to the public like the parade and some of the kid’s activities but others like concerts and the demolition derby require a ticket The prices are very reasonable and you can buy them online ahead of time to skip the lines.A couple more things from the FAQ that I think are helpful to know before you go You can bring your chairs and blankets to sit on but no outside food or drinks are allowed inside the event areas Other than that pets are welcome as long as they are on a leash and you clean up after them so bring your furry friends if you want to include them in the fun.If you’re wondering about accessibility, the festival is committed to making sure everyone can enjoy it. There are ADA parking spaces available and shuttle services for those who need them. Also, most of the event areas are wheelchair accessible, which is great. One of the questions I get a lot is about weather OSD goes on rain or shine so be sure to check the forecast and dress accordingly If it looks like rain pack a poncho or waterproof jacket because umbrellas might not be allowed in some areas and you still want to be able to enjoy everything without getting soaked. For families with kids, there are tons of kid-friendly activities, including a kids' zone with games and rides. If you want to make the most of it, bring some cash because not all vendors take cards, and there are lots of small purchases to be made, from food to souvenirs. Also, keep in mind the festival is cash-friendly, so bringing some money is always a good idea, even though some vendors do accept cards. There are ATMs on site, but they can have long lines sometimes. If you want to stay connected, the festival has a social media presence where they post updates and event changes, so following them before and during the festival is a smart move. You might also want to download the festival schedule from the website so you don’t miss any of your favorite events. One last thing I love about Old Settlers Days is how it brings the community together It’s not just about the events but the people you meet the vibe you feel and the memories you make So when you go be sure to say hi to some of the vendors and locals because that’s part of what makes OSD so special. So to recap get there early or during off times to avoid lines bring cash and comfy shoes dress for the weather and don’t forget your chair or blanket for relaxing between events Remember tickets are needed for some things so buy them ahead if you can And most importantly have fun and enjoy the great energy of Old Settlers Days.

Hononegah Pride is Running High This Week

There’s something special about this time of year. The school year is wrapping up, caps and gowns are getting zipped up, and our local athletes are giving us plenty to cheer about. Hononegah High School has had an incredible run this week, and I just wanted to take a moment to highlight all the amazing things happening in our community.Let’s start with Hononegah Athletics. The baseball team pulled off an unforgettable win over Harlem, scoring three runs in the bottom of the 7th. That clutch performance earned them a shot at the Regional Championship against Hampshire this Saturday. Big things are happening on the diamond.Meanwhile, junior tennis player Braden Monson made serious waves at the State Tennis Tournament, going 3-1 on the day and landing in the top 24 in the state. He’s back in action tomorrow morning, and we’ll all be rooting for him.Softball is right in the middle of a postseason run, too, getting ready to take on DeKalb for a Regional Championship at Stromquist Field. And boys' track is headed to the IHSA State Meet, where they’ll be looking to bring home some All-State honors. These athletes are putting in the work and making our whole community proud.Aand let’s not forget our boys volleyball team, who are Regional Champs and now gearing up for the Sectional Semi-Final at South Elgin. The teamwork, dedication, and energy these student-athletes bring are something that deserves to be celebrated.Speaking of celebrating, huge congratulations to the Hononegah Class of 2025! It’s no small thing to make it through four years of high school, especially with everything these past few years have thrown your way. You’ve shown grit, heart, and determination, and now it’s your time to shine.Whether you’re heading off to college, jumping into the workforce, taking a gap year, or still figuring it all out, you’ve earned this moment. Soak it in.To all the athletes, students, coaches, teachers, and families who make up the Hononegah community, thank you for showing what school pride really looks like. This week has been a reminder of how lucky we are to be part of something so strong and so connected.

🎓 Congratulations to the BMHS Class of 2025! 🎓

🎓 Congratulations to the BMHS Class of 2025! 🎓

As graduation day approaches, I want to take a moment to give a huge congratulations to the incredible students graduating from Beloit Memorial High School this year! 🎉June 7th will be a special day for so many families in the Stateline area, and for the Class of 2025, it marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter. But before we look forward, let’s take a quick walk through the legacy of the Purple Knights.Beloit Memorial High School has been a cornerstone of the community for over a century. The current BMHS building opened in 1966, located right along the Rock River with its iconic purple exterior and sprawling campus. Before that, Beloit High School had existed in earlier forms, with history dating back to the 1800s. Over the decades, BMHS has evolved and expanded—adding athletic fields, performance spaces, and modern renovations to keep up with the times, including a major renovation to the auditorium and athletic wing in the early 2000s.Through it all, BMHS has stood as a symbol of pride for the city of Beloit. If you’re from Beloit, you already know: BMHS takes athletics seriously. The school has a long-standing rivalry with Janesville schools and has been home to powerhouse programs in track and field, football, swimming, and basketball. In fact, Beloit Memorial’s boys swim team has made multiple appearances at the state level, and the school has earned state titles in various sports throughout its history.Beyond trophies and titles, BMHS has always celebrated teamwork, spirit, and community—values that extend far beyond the field.Over the years, BMHS has produced some pretty amazing alumni. A few notable names include:Jim Caldwell – Former NFL head coach of the Indianapolis Colts and Detroit Lions.Everett Mitchell – Former Wisconsin Supreme Court Justice.Joe Davis – National sports broadcaster for FOX and the voice of the Los Angeles Dodgers. Each one of them started their journey right here at BMHS—and who knows, the Class of 2025 could have the next big name in sports, media, or leadership. While BMHS is, of course, an academic institution, it’s also widely recognized for its extracurricular programs. The school has an award-winning band program that has traveled for national performances, a theater program that puts on high-level productions, and plenty of clubs that foster creativity and leadership. The annual show choir competitions and marching band showcases bring the community together and highlight the amazing talent right here in Beloit.Did you graduate from BMHS? What class were you in? What’s one memory that still makes you smile?I’d love to hear your stories—drop them in the comments below! Whether you're Class of ’75 or Class of ’25, this is your place to reminisce and celebrate everything it means to be a Purple Knight.🎉 Congrats again to the BMHS Class of 2025—you’ve made your mark. Now go show the world what Beloit is all about.

Fridays in the Park – My Favorite Way to Do Lunch in Beloit

Fridays in the Park – My Favorite Way to Do Lunch in Beloit

There’s something special about being downtown on a Friday afternoon in the summertime. The sun is out, people are smiling, music is playing, and the smell of delicious food is floating through the air. That’s Fridays in the Park—and it’s honestly one of my favorite events in Beloit. From May 23 through August 29, every Friday between 11:30 AM and 1:30 PM, the heart of downtown transforms into a casual lunch party. Local restaurants set up shop to serve affordable, freshly made meals and drinks—usually just $10 total for both. Each week is a little different, which keeps it fun. One Friday might feature pulled pork sandwiches and slaw, while the next has wraps, tacos, or pasta. You never know what you’re going to find, but you always know it’s going to be good. There’s live music playing, friends catching up, coworkers taking a break, families grabbing a quick bite—it’s just a feel-good scene. And it’s one of those things that reminds me why I love covering the Stateline area. Events like this aren’t flashy or over-the-top… they’re local, real, and centered around community. So if you’re ever wondering what to do on a Friday lunch hour in Beloit, this is it. Whether you work nearby, live in the area, or are just visiting, Fridays in the Park is an easy way to support local businesses, hear some live music, and enjoy a little sunshine in the middle of your day.I'll definitely be there for a few of these Fridays—camera in one hand, taco in the other. If you see me, say hi! And as always, keep showing up for these awesome local events. That’s what keeps the Stateline strong. 💛

Breakfast Done Right at Nora’s Place in South Beloit

Breakfast Done Right at Nora’s Place in South Beloit

There’s just something about a good skillet that hits different in the morning—and Nora’s Place in South Beloit delivered exactly what I didn’t know I needed today.I ordered the chorizo skillet, which came loaded with perfectly grilled hash browns, red and green peppers, and a couple of eggs on top—just the way I like it. I added a little hot sauce on the side, and that kicked it up just enough. The peppers had that beautiful grilled flavor, not soggy or overdone—just right. I've been trying to eat healthier lately, and this was one of those rare meals that felt indulgent and clean. It was satisfying but didn’t leave me feeling weighed down. Honestly, I walked out feeling better than when I walked in.If you’ve never been to Nora’s Place, it’s tucked right off Blackhawk Blvd, and it’s one of those diners that immediately makes you feel like you’ve been coming there for years—even if it’s your first time. It’s cozy, casual, and full of friendly faces. The service is quick, the coffee is strong (and worth a mention), and there’s that laid-back hometown vibe that just makes the food taste better.Nora’s has been a staple in the community for a while now, known for hearty American breakfasts, comforting lunches, and generous portions. Beyond the skillet, they’ve got everything from fluffy pancakes and French toast to thick Angus burgers and steak sandwiches. There’s even a fun kid’s menu if you’re bringing the family. So if you’re looking for a solid breakfast spot that feels like home and leaves you full in the best way, Nora’s Place should be on your list.
