We at Stateline Buzz are thrilled to welcome The Gem Shop in Rockton as one of our newest sponsors! This family-owned gem has been a beloved part of the community for decades, and we're excited to share their incredible story and the legacy they've built over the years.

The Gem Shop’s story begins with Bruce Mueller, a curious young boy who stumbled upon a dinosaur bone. Fascinated by this ancient artifact, Bruce sought out experts at a local college to learn more about its origins. This experience ignited a lifelong passion for rocks, minerals, and fossils, setting Bruce on a path that would eventually lead to the creation of The Gem Shop.

Bruce's interest in geology only grew stronger over the years. He went on to earn a master’s degree in Geology, combining his love for the earth with a deep understanding of its treasures. Bruce shared this passion with others as a high school Earth Science teacher in Rockford, where he taught not only geology but also astronomy.

Bruce and his high school sweetheart, Shirley, shared a love for adventure and exploration. They traveled across the United States, hunting for unique rocks, minerals, and fossils to bring back and share with Bruce's students. However, their adventures began to add up in cost, leading them to a pivotal decision: they would start selling some of their finds. And so, a business was born.

In 1967, Bruce and Shirley opened their first shop, the C&M Rock Shop, in Beulah, Michigan. During the summer months, the family would set up shop along the main tourist highway in Northern Michigan, where they sold rocks, fossils, and eventually expanded into cutting and polishing stones. As their skills grew, they began creating custom jewelry, which quickly became a cornerstone of their business.

Each fall and winter, the Muellers would return to their home in Rockton, Illinois, only to head back to Michigan in the summer. But by 1981, they decided it was time to establish a permanent home for their business. That year, The Gem Shop opened its doors in Rockton, next to the historic Wagon Wheel, becoming a trusted and friendly jeweler for the community.

The Gem Shop's reputation for quality and integrity grew over the years. In 2001, the shop was honored with the prestigious Torch Award for Marketplace Ethics from the Better Business Bureau, recognizing their commitment to ethical business practices. This award, given to just one business per size group each year in Northern Illinois, including Chicagoland, is a testament to the values that have guided The Gem Shop from the beginning.

Today, The Gem Shop continues to thrive under the leadership of Shelly, a close family friend of the Muellers, who now owns and operates the business alongside her sons. They carry on the tradition of offering high-quality jewelry and exceptional customer service to the Rockton community.
