MLK Day, or Martin Luther King Jr. Day, is a federal holiday in the United States celebrating the birthday of Martin Luther King Jr. It is observed on the third Monday of January each year, which is around the time of King's birthday on January 15th. The holiday honors the civil rights leader and advocate for nonviolent resistance against racial segregation and discrimination in the 1950s and 1960s. King is best known for his role in the advancement of civil rights using nonviolent civil disobedience based on his Christian beliefs. In 1986, MLK Day was officially recognized as a federal holiday and is now celebrated by people all over the country with parades, speeches, and acts of community service.

Martin Luther King Jr. was a Baptist minister and civil rights activist who played a key role in the American civil rights movement from the mid-1950s until his assassination in 1968. He is best known for his use of nonviolent civil disobedience to fight for racial equality in the United States.

King's most famous speech, "I Have a Dream," delivered on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C. in 1963, called for an end to racism and for civil and economic rights for African Americans. He also helped organize the Montgomery Bus Boycott, which lasted for 385 days and resulted in the U.S. Supreme Court declaring segregation on public buses to be unconstitutional.
