Featured Places

If you’re anything like me, you love having that go-to place where every visit feels like a small escape—where it’s all about indulging and making life a little sweeter. That’s exactly what Flying Pig in Beloit offers, and I couldn’t be more excited to share why this spot is one of my absolute favorites when I’m in the mood for something delicious.

A Treat for Every Craving

Walking into Flying Pig feels like stepping into a candy wonderland. Whether you’re after classic comfort snacks or something with a twist, they have you covered. From their buttery popcorn and smooth ice cream to the wall of candy packed with so many options, it’s hard to pick just one thing. And if you’ve never tried edible cookie dough—well, this is your chance! They also bake cookies that are perfect for that soft, chewy bite we all crave.

Thirsty? No problem. Their drink menu is just as impressive. From sweet, refreshing beverages to fun concoctions that complement their snacks, you’ll leave with your sweet tooth fully satisfied. This is the kind of place you stop at after school, after work, or whenever you feel like treating yourself, no special occasion needed!

Where It All Began

Flying Pig didn’t always have its cozy spot in Beloit. Believe it or not, it all started back on May 17, 2008, with a little green trailer parked in what used to be the Hilander parking lot in Roscoe, Illinois. Back then, they were best known for their shaved ice—a summer classic. Although they’ve moved beyond the parking lot days, that commitment to delicious, fun treats has stayed with them.

So, where did the name Flying Pig come from? Here’s the story:

Back when the owners lived in Little Rock, Arkansas, they would take their kids to a shaved ice stand that had three little pigs painted on the side. Anytime the kids wanted a treat, they’d excitedly ask to visit the “three little piggies.” Those sweet family memories stayed with them, and when they opened their own treat stand years later, the name Three Little Piggies seemed like a natural choice.

But that’s when the owner’s husband decided to have a little fun with it. As a pilot and a proud Arkansas Razorbacks fan (Go Hogs!), he suggested “Flying Pig” as the name, giving it a playful twist and a nod to their Southern roots. And just like that, Flying Pig was born—a business that brought a little taste of the South to the Midwest.

Bringing Joy to Beloit

Flying Pig is more than just a place to grab a treat—it’s a business that makes you feel welcome. Every time I stop by, the vibe is friendly, warm, and easy-going. It’s a spot where kids light up as they pick their candy and adults can’t resist sneaking a bite of cookie dough. It’s clear that the same passion and playfulness that started Flying Pig back in 2008 is still alive today.

Whether you’re swinging by for a quick snack, grabbing popcorn for a movie night, or cooling off with some ice cream, Flying Pig delivers on all fronts. There’s just something magical about a place where sweets and smiles come so easily—and in Beloit, this is that place.

Plan Your Visit

If you haven’t visited Flying Pig yet, you’re missing out! This is the kind of spot where everyone—kids, families, and even solo treat-seekers—feels welcome. Whether it’s your first visit or your tenth, Flying Pig always has something new and delicious to discover.

Next time you’re in Beloit and need a treat (or three), stop by Flying Pig. It’s one of my go-to spots, and trust me—you won’t leave empty-handed!

Turtle Island Playground at Riverside Park Was So Worth the Wait

I had a chance to visit the brand new Turtle Island Playground at Riverside Park in Beloit and let me tell you, it completely blew me away.If you have not seen this space yet, make a point to go. Whether you have kids or you are just looking for a beautiful place to spend time with family, this new addition to Riverside Park is something special. I walked through it myself and felt like a kid again. There is so much thought and care put into this playground, and it really shows. The main play structure is massive and two levels tall, with a bridge that connects both sides. I climbed all the way up to the top just to take in the view and it was totally worth it. You can see the whole park from up there. The slides coming down were too tempting to pass up, so yes, I definitely slid down one like I was seven years old. No regrets. What really caught my attention was the water stream feature. It is such a unique and fun touch that adds an extra layer of play. On a warm day, I can already imagine kids splashing around and exploring. Right next to it is a fully accessible merry-go-round and a turtle shell swing that is also inclusive, so more families can enjoy this space together. There is also a separate toddler playground, sensory boards, and the entire surface is that soft pour-in-place material, which makes it safer and easier to move around on. Whether your kids are little or a bit older, there is something for everyone to enjoy.Riverside Park itself has always been one of my favorite places in Beloit. You are right along the river, there are plenty of open spaces for picnics, walking trails, and now this incredible playground that just makes it even more of a destination. You can tell that this space was built with love and with the community in mind.If you are looking for a place to bring your family this weekend, go explore Turtle Island. It is fun, it is beautiful, and it is exactly the kind of project that makes me proud to call the Stateline area home.See you out there.

That was the case when I stopped by Karenke Candle Company, run by Thomas and his wife Melissa.Their story started with a simple candle-making kit. They wanted to make candles for friends and family, but the results were not quite what they hoped for. Instead of giving up, they took it as a challenge. Thomas and Melissa spent over a year testing different types of wax and fragrances until they found a combination that checked all the boxes for clean ingredients, long burn time, and amazing scent quality.Today, Karenke Candle Company offers a full line of products, including soy-based candles, wax melts, room sprays, and even custom orders for weddings, special events, and gifts. Cornellier Fireworks: A Blast of Tradition and Variety

Cornellier Fireworks: A Blast of Tradition and VarietyThere is something magical about walking into a fireworks store. The excitement. The colors. The anticipation of lighting up the sky. At Cornellier Fireworks, that feeling is alive and well. With summer in full swing and the Fourth of July right around the corner, I stopped by their Beloit location to see what they have going on this season. From the moment I walked in, it was clear that this place is ready to help anyone put on an unforgettable show.Cornellier Fireworks has a story that goes back to the early 1970s. It started with Larry Cornellier Sr., who spotted an opportunity to support his family by selling fireworks. With just two hundred dollars borrowed from a friend, he opened a small stand in Beloit, Wisconsin. That small stand quickly turned into something much bigger. With hard work, smart investments, and the support of those around him, the business expanded. Larry eventually bought out the wholesaler who gave him his start and opened permanent stores, growing into the successful multi-location operation it is today.Today, Cornellier Fireworks has four locations, including one right here in Beloit. Their team works hard to make sure there is something for everyone who walks through the doors. Whether you are planning a big neighborhood display or just picking up a few items for the backyard, they have options for all ages and experience levels. If you have little ones like I do, you will appreciate the selection of fountains, sparklers, and family-friendly items that light up the night without the loud booms. They even have snacks and small treats in the shop, which makes the whole experience feel more like a fun outing than just a shopping trip. For those looking to go big, there are rows and rows of high-impact fireworks that are sure to make your celebration unforgettable. The best part? Everything is buy one get one free all year long. That kind of value makes it easy to stock up and get the most out of your budget.Another thing I noticed during my visit was how friendly and knowledgeable the staff is. They are more than happy to walk you through different products, explain what each firework does, and help you create the perfect display. Whether you are a seasoned firework enthusiast or a first-time buyer, they will make sure you leave with exactly what you need. The showroom itself is impressive. Wide aisles, clearly labeled sections, and a clean, welcoming layout make it easy to browse and compare different products. From colorful fountains and Roman candles to artillery shells and grand finales, everything is laid out in a way that makes shopping simple and fun.Cornellier Fireworks is more than just a place to buy fireworks. It is a piece of local history. It is a story of taking a chance and building something meaningful. And most of all, it is a spot where you can walk in excited and walk out ready to light up the sky.Whether you are planning a big celebration or just want a few sparklers for the kids, stop by and see what Cornellier Fireworks has to offer. They have something for everyone and are ready to help you make this summer one to remember.

A Summer Night at the Rockton River Market

There is something special about summer nights in downtown Rockton. If you have never been to the Rockton River Market, you are missing out on one of the best weekly events in the Stateline area.Held every Wednesday, the River Market brings together everything that makes a community feel connected. Good food, live music, local makers, and a relaxed, welcoming vibe. Whether you are going with your family, meeting up with friends, or just stopping by after work, this event is worth checking out.During my visit, I made it a point to explore as much as I could. The brisket grilled cheese I had was absolutely amazing. It was rich, smoky, perfectly toasted, and honestly one of the best grilled cheese sandwiches I have had in a long time. I paired it with a cold, refreshing peach beer that hit just right on a warm evening.Beyond the food, the music playing in the background really sets the mood. You will usually find a local band or solo artist performing live, giving the whole space a chill and upbeat energy. It is the kind of place where you can grab a bite, sip on something cold, and just enjoy the moment. The vendors are definitely worth exploring. The variety is incredible with everything from handmade crafts and jewelry to custom home decor, soaps, candles, and more. There is always something new to see, and you can tell each vendor brings their own unique style to the market. It is a great way to support small local businesses and maybe find a gift or treat for yourself along the way. There were also several food trucks on site, each offering something a little different. A Cozy and Classy Dining Spot You’ll Want to Visit Again

If you’re looking for a place in Beloit where the food is thoughtful, the atmosphere is warm, and every detail feels just right, Liberty House Grill should be at the top of your list. Tucked away on Liberty Avenue, this spot offers an upscale dining experience without feeling too formal or out of reach.I stopped in recently and met the owner, Joel. Joel has been around restaurants his entire life. His dad owns a well-known place in Chicago, so running a kitchen and creating a great customer experience is something that comes naturally to him. Two years ago, he took over Liberty House Grill and has really shaped it into something special for the Stateline area. The space is elegant but still feels relaxed. It’s the kind of place where you can dress up for a date night or bring the whole family for a nice dinner. Every table is treated like a priority, and the service reflects that from the moment you walk in.Now let’s talk food. The menu is packed with bold flavors and fresh ingredients. Think BBQ baby back ribs, gourmet burgers, house made pastas, and standout surf and turf plates. I had the shrimp and scallops, and I’m still thinking about how perfectly they were cooked. If brunch is more your thing, make sure to stop by on a Sunday between nine and two. Their brunch is one of the best I’ve had in the area, and the steak and eggs hit the spot. One feature that really makes this place unique is the downstairs wine cellar. It opens on weekends and serves as an exclusive spot for private dinners and small gatherings. Whether you’re a casual wine drinker or someone who knows their vintages, there’s something here for you.Joel and his team have built a space that feels both refined and welcoming. It is clear they care about the customer experience just as much as the food they put on the plate. From the ambiance to the presentation, everything is done with purpose. If you’re planning your next night out or want to treat yourself to a great meal, Liberty House Grill is well worth a visit. My Visit to the South Beloit Public Library

I recently stopped by the South Beloit Public Library to see what it was all about. I’ve always known it was there, but I never took the time to really explore it until now. And wow, I’m glad I did. This place has way more going on than I expected.Right when I walked in, I met Brenda and Elaine. They’re the ones running the show, and they couldn’t have been more welcoming. You can tell they love what they do. They were excited to share everything the library offers, and I could feel their energy from the start. The space itself is cozy, clean, and inviting. There’s a kids area filled with books and toys, plus a solid collection of DVDs, graphic novels, and even a Spanish book section. It feels like a place where anyone can come in and find something they enjoy. They also have something called the Library of Things. I thought that was super cool. You can borrow things like mobile hotspots, disc golf kits, and more. It’s such a great resource for the community. One of my favorite parts was learning about their events and programs. They’ve got story time for kids every Thursday and Friday morning, which is perfect for families. There’s a LEGO club, adult book clubs, and even a craft and activity night. They also have something called the Armchair Traveler series, where they highlight one of the 50 states and pair it with a book, movie, and recipe. It’s a fun way to experience a new place without leaving town.Right now, their Summer Reading Program is in full swing. It runs from June 2 through July 26, and it’s built to make reading fun for kids. They log their minutes, earn stickers, get weekly prizes, and can even win treats from Dari Ripple when they hit their goals. Whether they’re reading books, comics, magazines, or being read to, it all counts.Another awesome service they offer is homebound delivery. If someone is physically unable to visit the library due to age, illness, or disability, they’ll deliver books and materials straight to their door. That kind of thoughtfulness is what really sets this place apart. The South Beloit Public Library is more than a place to check out books. It’s a hub for creativity, learning, and community connection. And it’s run by people who truly care about making a difference. If you haven’t been in a while or have never visited, I highly recommend stopping by.Whether you’re a parent looking for things to do with your kids, someone who loves to read, or just curious about what your local library can offer, this is a great place to start. And if you want to support what they’re doing, ask how you can get involved. Every little bit helps keep these programs running and growing.Big shoutout to Brenda, Elaine, and the whole team at the South Beloit Public Library. Thanks for all you do.

Serving with Scissors: My Time with Cuts for Christ

Every once in a while, you meet people who instantly make you stop and reflect. That happened when I met Juan and Rose, the heart and hands behind Cuts for Christ.Since October 2023, this husband-and-wife duo has been showing up for the Stateline community in a powerful way, offering free haircuts, clothing, food, and hygiene supplies to those in need. No strings attached. No judgment. Just love and service.Juan’s been cutting hair for nearly two decades. He once had a chair at Five Star in Janesville, building up his craft and connecting with clients. But his journey took a turn after a moment of inspiration struck from the most unexpected place—TikTok. He saw another creator giving free haircuts to the homeless, and it hit him hard. Juan told me it stirred something in his heart that he couldn’t ignore. It wasn’t just a nice idea… it was a calling. And instead of overthinking it or waiting for the “right time,” Juan and Rose just started. They went out into the community with clippers, clothes, and compassion, funding the whole operation themselves. When I met them, they were working their way through a line of folks waiting patiently for haircuts. But what stood out even more than the buzzing of clippers was the energy—calm, kind, a, d welcoming. Everyone who came up to them left a little more confident, a little more cared for.We talked in between haircuts. Juan told me, “Everyone has a gift. I’m just using mine.” And that stuck with me. His message isn’t about being a barber or a nonprofit founder. It’s about realizing that we all have something we can use to help others. Whether that’s a trade, a talent, or even just time, when you give it with love, it matters.Rose, by the way, is a force in her own right. While Juan’s handling the haircuts, she’s organizing care kits, handing out snacks, and making sure people feel seen. This isn’t just charity, it’s community-building at its core.Cuts for Christ is now officially a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, and they’re continuing to grow the mission. But they still need support. They’re doing big things on a grassroots budget, and any donation can help keep their work going—more supplies, more cuts, more impact.I left our time together feeling grateful, inspired, and a little challenged—in the best way. It’s easy to get caught up in our own lives, but Juan and Rose reminded me what it looks like to simply show up for people. If you’re looking for a way to give back or support something truly meaningful here in the Stateline area, check out Cuts for Christ. You can donate directly, follow their journey, or even volunteer if you feel called. This isn’t just about haircuts. It’s about restoring dignity, spreading hope, and reminding people they matter.
