If you're on the lookout for a charming new spot to explore in Rockton, look no further than Inkwell Books & Threads. I recently had the pleasure of creating a video for this delightful new business, and I couldn't be more excited to share my experience. Upon meeting the owners, Tierra and her husband, I was given a warm and welcoming tour of their quaint bookstore. The energy and atmosphere of Inkwell Books & Threads immediately struck me as cozy and inviting; it felt like I was right at home in my own study, ready to dive into a good book.

What's even more fascinating about this gem of a store is their collection of vintage clothing. From retro sports sweaters to a wide array of other vintage fashion pieces, you're sure to find something unique and stylish to add to your wardrobe. And if you're in the market for a great pair of Levi jeans, Inkwell has got you covered. But that's not all they have to offer! At Inkwell, you have the option to browse their carefully curated book selection or even order a book that you don't see on their shelves. Keep an eye out for their monthly book clubs and workshops, which promise to be a fantastic way to connect with fellow book enthusiasts. As a proud bookworm, I can't wait to bring my wife and daughter here to share in the joy of this wonderful store. They even have a special area just for kids with a selection of books to keep young readers entertained. Beloit Dirty Dash Delivers Mud, Laughter, and Memories

When I arrived at Big Hill Park for the Beloit Dirty Dash, I could tell right away this was not going to be a typical day at the park. Families were gathering, kids were buzzing with excitement, and the course ahead promised nothing but mud, challenges, and plenty of fun.The Dirty Dash is an annual event that brings kids from all over the Stateline together for a one-of-a-kind experience. The idea is simple: a run through the woods filled with mud pits, hills, and playful obstacles that push kids while letting them embrace the joy of getting messy. It is not about competing for a medal or posting the fastest time. It is about getting outside, trying something new, and walking away with a smile. What stood out most to me was how much thought goes into making the event work for every age group. Kids as young as four can take part, with distances ranging from a half mile to a full mile, depending on age. Races are staggered so each group gets its own time on the course, and for families who want to make it a shared memory, there is even a family run where parents can join the fun.Once the first groups started running, it was clear why the Dirty Dash has become such a tradition. The kids were not just jogging on a trail. They were climbing, crawling, sliding, and laughing the whole way through. Some carefully stepped their way into the mud at first, while others dove right in without hesitation. The finish line is where you see the real payoff. Every child who completes the course comes through with a face full of pride and clothes covered in mud. Parents cheer, siblings laugh, and everyone seems to enjoy the fact that this is one of those rare events where being messy is something to celebrate. The Dirty Dash draws more than 700 kids each year, with registration capped to keep the event manageable. Families return year after year because the day delivers more than just fun. It is also a chance for kids to build confidence, be active, and spend time outdoors. For me, the highlight of covering this event was watching the pure joy on the kids’ faces. In a time where so much of life revolves around screens, this event reminds us of the importance of play. Running free, getting dirty, and not worrying about anything other than the next splash of mud is what makes the Dirty Dash special. The Beloit Dirty Dash is more than just a run through the woods. It is a community tradition, a chance for kids to test themselves, and an experience they will remember long after the mud has been washed away.

A Night at the Ballpark: Experiencing a Beloit Sky Carp Game Beyond the Baseball

Beloit has a gem sitting right along the Rock River: ABC Supply Stadium, home of the Beloit Sky Carp. While it is the place to catch minor league baseball, the experience stretches far beyond the game itself. From the moment you arrive, the stadium feels larger than life. The design and energy make it easy to forget you are not walking into a major league park. Families fill the concourse, kids tug at their parents’ hands to get to the action, and the atmosphere has the buzz of a community gathering.Food is part of the fun here. The stadium serves up Wisconsin favorites like bratwurst and cheese curds, but fans will also find tacos, cheesesteaks, funnel cake fries, and plenty of sweet treats. Adults are not left out either. The beer and cocktail options are impressive, with everything from local brews to frozen Old-Fashioneds.Once the game starts, the entertainment keeps rolling. Fans sing along to classic baseball songs, kids line up for races on the field, and Poopsie the goose brings the crowd together with his antics. For families with young children, the kids’ play area is a big draw, giving parents a break while little ones enjoy their own part of the stadium.Beyond the action, the setting makes the experience even better. The ballpark sits right in downtown Beloit with the Rock River as a backdrop, giving evening games a picture perfect feel. Firework nights and themed promotions add even more excitement, making each visit unique. The Beloit Sky Carp have built something special here. ABC Supply Stadium is more than a venue for baseball. It is a place for families, friends, and the community to come together and enjoy a night out. Whether you are a die-hard baseball fan or just looking for something to do on a summer night, a Sky Carp game delivers the full experience.

TJs Gourmet Snacks Foods – A Local Favorite with Big Flavor

TJs Gourmet Snacks Foods – A Local Favorite with Big FlavorFresh, crunchy, and full of flavor. That is what you get every time you open a bag from TJs Gourmet Snacks Foods. This local business is run by Vergil, Mike, and Michelle, and it all started with a conversation and a love for a classic snack. When Vergil first met Mr B, the two talked about his pork snack business, which was being made in the back of Mr B’s restaurant. Years later, when Mr B decided to sell, Vergil jumped at the chance to work with a friend and carry on a business he loved. Even more special, this meant continuing the legacy of a mid 90s Black owned business.TJs Gourmet Snacks Foods makes pork rinds, cracklings, and their own seasoning blend. Everything is produced by hand and sold at local stores and gas stations from Milwaukee to Rockford. One of the most popular places to find them is Woodmans, or you can stop by Mr B’s to get them as fresh as possible.I had the chance to visit their location inside Mr B’s and watch them make pork rinds from scratch for the first time. It was a really cool experience, especially because I have always enjoyed these snacks. Every bite is packed with flavor and they even have smaller bags that are perfect for on the go.Whether you are looking for a fresh local snack to enjoy at home, on the road, or at your next gathering, TJs Gourmet Snacks Foods delivers flavor that keeps you coming back. You can find them in stores, at Mr B’s, or order online for the same great taste shipped right to you.

Breakfast, Community, and Conversation at Mr. B’s in Beloit

There’s something about a good breakfast spot that just sets the tone for your day. And if you’re in Beloit, one place that gets it right is Mr. B’s. Tucked into a cozy corner on Liberty Avenue, this local favorite has been around since the mid-90s, quietly building a loyal following of regulars, out-of-towners, and folks just passing through who were lucky enough to hear about it.I stopped by recently because, honestly, I just love a solid breakfast. I kept it classic—coffee, pancakes, eggs, and turkey bacon, and it hit the spot. The food is everything you want from a breakfast joint: no frills, well-cooked, and super affordable. But Mr. B’s is more than what’s on your plate. It’s the kind of place where you can walk in and immediately feel like you belong. The walls are covered in signed dollar bills and a giant world map that shows just how far people have come to find this little diner. And yes, you can meet Mr. B himself; he’s often there, chatting with customers, checking in, and just being part of the energy that makes this place feel alive. That’s the real charm. People talk here. Strangers say good morning, locals catch up over coffee, and conversations spill from one table to the next. It’s like everyone’s part of the same breakfast club. And if you’ve got room for something sweet, they’ve also got Cedar Crest ice cream and fresh bakery items, making it a great spot to stop by any time before lunch.Mr. B’s may be small, but its impact is big. It’s local, it’s welcoming, and it’s got that timeless diner vibe that’s hard to come by these days. So if you haven’t been, go. If you have, you probably already know what I’m talking about.Let me know if you want to add quotes from Mr. B or feature customer stories in future posts.

The Fire Barn in Durand: Local Flavor, Big Heart, and a Whole Lot of Community Pride

When you walk into The Fire Barn in downtown Durand, you feel it — the energy, the history, and the pride that fuels everything happening here. This isn't just a restaurant. It’s a local comeback story, a neighborhood hangout, and a celebration of small-town spirit.I met with Mike, Sean, and Jolynn, the owners behind the vision, and it’s clear they’re not just running a business — they’re continuing a legacy. Mike especially has deep roots in Durand. He’s always loved the area and dreamed of seeing this location — right next to his Anytime Fitness — thrive. When the opportunity came up to open something new here, he knew he had to be a part of it. The goal? Bring great food, strong drinks, and even better service to a town they care about deeply. The Fire Barn is everything you want in a bar and grill. It's relaxed, welcoming, and packed with personality. You’ll find American comfort food done right — think juicy smash burgers, fresh wraps, signature salads, and wings that hit the spot. Their Barn Burger is the real showstopper. Three smashed patties, grilled onions, and that irresistible barn sauce — it’s bold, flavorful, and just messy enough to remind you it’s the real deal. The drink menu holds its own too. With 8 beers on draft and plenty more to choose from, there’s something for everyone. But I’ve got to give a special shout-out to the spicy watermelon margarita. On a hot summer day, that drink is pure magic — refreshing with just the right kick.Step into the back barn and you’ll find something special. A cozy patio with seating for about 20, but more than that, a space that honors Durand’s past. Photos, jerseys, and memorabilia from local athletes, coaches, and teams line the walls — Pecatonica, DuPec, Durand — it’s all here. There’s a sense of pride in these walls, a reminder of the town’s talent and history. And the owners are still collecting — they’ve put out a call for photos of athletes from the last 30 years, so the legacy keeps growing.Starting July 28, they’re also kicking off their Durand-Ruel Charms Queen of Hearts Jackpot — a chance to win big while giving back to local programs and charities. It’s fun, it’s exciting, and it’s another way The Fire Barn is putting community first.Behind the scenes, you’ve got years of hospitality experience making this place run smoothly. From Eddie and Vic cooking it up in the kitchen to Heather holding it down behind the bar, everyone here is committed to creating a great experience — friendly faces, fast service, and food that keeps you coming back.Whether you’re here for the game (they’ve got over 23 HD screens), the drinks, or just a laid-back dinner with friends, The Fire Barn delivers. It’s more than a restaurant — it’s a gathering place, a tribute to local roots, and a great example of what happens when people invest in their community. You can check out the menu, order online, or plan your visit at thefirebarn.com.Welcome back to The Fire Barn — Durand’s new favorite hangout.

New in Durand: GameStar Arcade is the Local Spot for Big-Time Fun

I had the chance to swing by GameStar Arcade in Durand, and let me just say, this place is a blast. It’s brand new, only two months old, and already it’s creating some serious buzz. If you're looking for a local spot to hang out with family, host a birthday party, or just let loose and have fun like a kid again, GameStar is where it's at.I got to meet Erik, the owner, who’s not only super down to earth but also clearly passionate about what he's created here. His goal was simple: give families a place to stay local and still have a fun, exciting experience without needing to drive far. And he picked the perfect spot. Durand is right in the heart of everything. Honestly, if you're seeing this post, there's a good chance you're no more than 30 minutes away. Now, let’s talk games. This isn’t your typical throwback arcade with old machines from the 80s. Everything here is brand new, with a focus on the kinds of games you see trending online. They've got basketball shooting games, racing simulators, sports challenges, and even a Tiger Woods Golf Simulator that lets you feel like you're teeing off at Augusta. But the real star of the show? The VR 4D Experience.I tried it myself and was completely blown away. I strapped on the headset, got into the motion chair, and suddenly I was in a King Kong movie, dodging helicopters, shaking in my seat, the whole deal. It was immersive, intense, and honestly? One of the most fun things I’ve done in a while. It made me feel like a kid again. If you’ve never tried VR like this before, GameStar is a perfect first experience. What makes this place special is how much more they offer beyond the arcade. There’s a full service bar with a menu that includes appetizers and full meals, perfect if you're coming with a group or just want to chill and hang out. I grabbed a bite after hitting all the games, and the food did not disappoint. They also have slots for adults, a prize center, and yep, I actually won an Xbox while I was there. No joke. The prize center is filled with awesome rewards, from candy and toys to big ticket items that are totally winnable if you put in the time (or get lucky like I did).Outside, there’s a patio space for hanging out on nice days, and they even host live music events on select nights. The vibe here is super friendly and welcoming. Whether you’re a parent looking for a birthday party spot or someone just wanting to unwind with some games and a drink, they’ve got something for you.Oh, and I can't forget about the ice cream. They serve 20 flavors of Cedar Crest Ice Cream, which makes this place a go to spot all on its own, even if you're just in the mood for a cone on a hot day. It's a nice touch that shows how GameStar is thinking about the whole experience. Fun, food, and treats for everyone. This place is only getting started, and I can already tell it’s going to be a big hit in the Stateline area. Erik and his team have built something special. Something that feels fun, fresh, and super local. It’s got that hometown vibe with a big time entertainment feel.If you’re looking for your next night out, a birthday party location, or a place to just relive your favorite arcade moments with a modern twist, head to Durand and check out GameStar Arcade. You can find more info, including party bookings, menus, and event details, on their website: gamestararcade.comStateline Buzz approved. 👊
