The Beloit Public Library (BPL) is taking a huge step forward in serving the community, thanks to a remarkable $3.89 million grant from the Flexible Facilities Program (FFP). The announcement, made by Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers' office, promises transformative renovations for more than 30% of the library’s facility, allowing BPL to address some of the community's most pressing post-pandemic needs: workforce development, access to healthcare, high-speed internet, and education.

With this grant, Beloit Public Library is not just upgrading its space, but elevating its role within the community. The renovations will include cutting-edge Wi-Fi 7, new classrooms, flexible rooms, health monitoring rooms, computer labs, virtual interview rooms, and even a sensory room designed to offer inclusive spaces for everyone. These changes are set to make a real difference in the way people access resources at the library.

A standout feature of this renovation is the introduction of Discovery PLAYce, a brand-new early learning center designed for children ages 0-6 and their caregivers. This interactive space will focus on hands-on activities that encourage brain development and literacy in young children. As BPL Director Nick Dimassis said, "This grant is a game changer. It doesn’t come from planning on paper; it comes from years of listening to the community, forging valuable partnerships, and changing how we provide services to the community." Discovery PLAYce will be a free, enriching space that helps move the needle on early childhood literacy in Beloit, giving children the strong start they need to succeed in school and life.

The library’s commitment to the community doesn’t stop with early learning. The upgraded facilities will support workforce development through partnerships with the Department of Workforce Development, offering career services like resume workshops, online interview spaces, and job application assistance. In addition, BPL will expand healthcare access with telehealth rooms that allow residents to meet with healthcare providers virtually, reducing the stress of in-person visits, especially for mental health support.

In the words of Beloit City Manager Jerry Gabrielatos, “The library serves our community’s needs far beyond physical materials. This expansion will see increased access to workforce development tools, healthcare monitoring, technology, and early childhood literacy.”

What excites me most about these renovations is how they reflect the heart of the community. A city’s library can be a window into its soul, offering a peek into the values and priorities of its residents. The improvements at Beloit Public Library speak volumes about our shared commitment to education, inclusion, and growth. The impact this will have on our city is monumental, ensuring that all residents, regardless of their circumstances, have access to the tools they need to thrive.

I believe this is a turning point for Beloit. As our library evolves to meet the changing needs of the community, it’s clear that we’re investing not just in a building, but in the people who make this city great. It’s an honor to see these changes unfold, and I’m thrilled for the positive ripple effects this will have on the entire state of our city.

The Ultimate Guide to Old Settlers Days in Rockton IL – Tips, Food, Music, and More

The Ultimate Guide to Old Settlers Days in Rockton IL – Tips, Food, Music, and More

Hey everyone it’s Oscar here with Stateline Buzz and today I want to give you the ultimate guide to Old Settlers Days also known as OSD in Rockton Illinois If you’re planning to go or just curious about what it’s all about I’m going to break down everything you need to know to have the best experience possible.Old Settlers Days is this amazing community festival with a ton of history behind it It’s been around since 1946 and has grown into a huge celebration that brings together families friends and people from all around the area Whether you’ve been before or this will be your first time I want to share some tips and tricks to help you get the most out of your visit.First up let’s talk about what you can expect when you get there The festival usually runs over several days and something is going on all day long You will find live music from local and regional bands great food vendors with all kinds of delicious treats arts and crafts booths where you can shop for unique handmade goods and plenty of fun activities especially for kids like rides and games. One of the highlights for me every year is the parade. It shows off the spirit of the community and is a perfect way to kick off the celebration. If you are coming with kids or just love a good parade, make sure you find a good spot early so you can see everything. Now if you’re wondering about food you are in for a treat Old Settlers Days has a huge variety of food vendors ranging from classic carnival fare like funnel cakes corn dogs and cotton candy to more hearty options like pulled pork sandwiches fried fish and grilled burgers Don’t forget to check out some local favorites too because this festival is a great chance to try something new and support local businesses. If you want to beat the lines, my tip is to come early or during off-peak times like mid-afternoon on weekdays. The festival can get pretty busy, especially on weekends and in the evenings when the music events kick off. So, planning can help you enjoy the food without the wait.Parking and getting around are other things you should know about. The fe. festival has several parking lots, but they do fill up fast, especially on big event days. The website recommends carpooling or even biking if you are nearby. That way, you can avoid the hassle of parking and maybe even catch some fresh air on the way. When it comes to tickets Old Settlers Days offers a few different options depending on what events you want to see Some are free and open to the public like the parade and some of the kid’s activities but others like concerts and the demolition derby require a ticket The prices are very reasonable and you can buy them online ahead of time to skip the lines.A couple more things from the FAQ that I think are helpful to know before you go You can bring your chairs and blankets to sit on but no outside food or drinks are allowed inside the event areas Other than that pets are welcome as long as they are on a leash and you clean up after them so bring your furry friends if you want to include them in the fun.If you’re wondering about accessibility, the festival is committed to making sure everyone can enjoy it. There are ADA parking spaces available and shuttle services for those who need them. Also, most of the event areas are wheelchair accessible, which is great. One of the questions I get a lot is about weather OSD goes on rain or shine so be sure to check the forecast and dress accordingly If it looks like rain pack a poncho or waterproof jacket because umbrellas might not be allowed in some areas and you still want to be able to enjoy everything without getting soaked. For families with kids, there are tons of kid-friendly activities, including a kids' zone with games and rides. If you want to make the most of it, bring some cash because not all vendors take cards, and there are lots of small purchases to be made, from food to souvenirs. Also, keep in mind the festival is cash-friendly, so bringing some money is always a good idea, even though some vendors do accept cards. There are ATMs on site, but they can have long lines sometimes. If you want to stay connected, the festival has a social media presence where they post updates and event changes, so following them before and during the festival is a smart move. You might also want to download the festival schedule from the website so you don’t miss any of your favorite events. One last thing I love about Old Settlers Days is how it brings the community together It’s not just about the events but the people you meet the vibe you feel and the memories you make So when you go be sure to say hi to some of the vendors and locals because that’s part of what makes OSD so special. So to recap get there early or during off times to avoid lines bring cash and comfy shoes dress for the weather and don’t forget your chair or blanket for relaxing between events Remember tickets are needed for some things so buy them ahead if you can And most importantly have fun and enjoy the great energy of Old Settlers Days.

Hononegah Pride is Running High This Week

There’s something special about this time of year. The school year is wrapping up, caps and gowns are getting zipped up, and our local athletes are giving us plenty to cheer about. Hononegah High School has had an incredible run this week, and I just wanted to take a moment to highlight all the amazing things happening in our community.Let’s start with Hononegah Athletics. The baseball team pulled off an unforgettable win over Harlem, scoring three runs in the bottom of the 7th. That clutch performance earned them a shot at the Regional Championship against Hampshire this Saturday. Big things are happening on the diamond.Meanwhile, junior tennis player Braden Monson made serious waves at the State Tennis Tournament, going 3-1 on the day and landing in the top 24 in the state. He’s back in action tomorrow morning, and we’ll all be rooting for him.Softball is right in the middle of a postseason run, too, getting ready to take on DeKalb for a Regional Championship at Stromquist Field. And boys' track is headed to the IHSA State Meet, where they’ll be looking to bring home some All-State honors. These athletes are putting in the work and making our whole community proud.Aand let’s not forget our boys volleyball team, who are Regional Champs and now gearing up for the Sectional Semi-Final at South Elgin. The teamwork, dedication, and energy these student-athletes bring are something that deserves to be celebrated.Speaking of celebrating, huge congratulations to the Hononegah Class of 2025! It’s no small thing to make it through four years of high school, especially with everything these past few years have thrown your way. You’ve shown grit, heart, and determination, and now it’s your time to shine.Whether you’re heading off to college, jumping into the workforce, taking a gap year, or still figuring it all out, you’ve earned this moment. Soak it in.To all the athletes, students, coaches, teachers, and families who make up the Hononegah community, thank you for showing what school pride really looks like. This week has been a reminder of how lucky we are to be part of something so strong and so connected.

🎓 Congratulations to the BMHS Class of 2025! 🎓

As graduation day approaches, I want to take a moment to give a huge congratulations to the incredible students graduating from Beloit Memorial High School this year! 🎉June 7th will be a special day for so many families in the Stateline area, and for the Class of 2025, it marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter. But before we look forward, let’s take a quick walk through the legacy of the Purple Knights.Beloit Memorial High School has been a cornerstone of the community for over a century. The current BMHS building opened in 1966, located right along the Rock River with its iconic purple exterior and sprawling campus. Before that, Beloit High School had existed in earlier forms, with history dating back to the 1800s. Over the decades, BMHS has evolved and expanded—adding athletic fields, performance spaces, and modern renovations to keep up with the times, including a major renovation to the auditorium and athletic wing in the early 2000s.Through it all, BMHS has stood as a symbol of pride for the city of Beloit. If you’re from Beloit, you already know: BMHS takes athletics seriously. The school has a long-standing rivalry with Janesville schools and has been home to powerhouse programs in track and field, football, swimming, and basketball. In fact, Beloit Memorial’s boys swim team has made multiple appearances at the state level, and the school has earned state titles in various sports throughout its history.Beyond trophies and titles, BMHS has always celebrated teamwork, spirit, and community—values that extend far beyond the field.Over the years, BMHS has produced some pretty amazing alumni. A few notable names include:Jim Caldwell – Former NFL head coach of the Indianapolis Colts and Detroit Lions.Everett Mitchell – Former Wisconsin Supreme Court Justice.Joe Davis – National sports broadcaster for FOX and the voice of the Los Angeles Dodgers. Each one of them started their journey right here at BMHS—and who knows, the Class of 2025 could have the next big name in sports, media, or leadership. While BMHS is, of course, an academic institution, it’s also widely recognized for its extracurricular programs. The school has an award-winning band program that has traveled for national performances, a theater program that puts on high-level productions, and plenty of clubs that foster creativity and leadership. The annual show choir competitions and marching band showcases bring the community together and highlight the amazing talent right here in Beloit.Did you graduate from BMHS? What class were you in? What’s one memory that still makes you smile?I’d love to hear your stories—drop them in the comments below! Whether you're Class of ’75 or Class of ’25, this is your place to reminisce and celebrate everything it means to be a Purple Knight.🎉 Congrats again to the BMHS Class of 2025—you’ve made your mark. Fridays in the Park – My Favorite Way to Do Lunch in Beloit

Fridays in the Park – My Favorite Way to Do Lunch in Beloit

There’s something special about being downtown on a Friday afternoon in the summertime. The sun is out, people are smiling, music is playing, and the smell of delicious food is floating through the air. That’s Fridays in the Park—and it’s honestly one of my favorite events in Beloit. From May 23 through August 29, every Friday between 11:30 AM and 1:30 PM, the heart of downtown transforms into a casual lunch party. Local restaurants set up shop to serve affordable, freshly made meals and drinks—usually just $10 total for both. Each week is a little different, which keeps it fun. One Friday might feature pulled pork sandwiches and slaw, while the next has wraps, tacos, or pasta. You never know what you’re going to find, but you always know it’s going to be good. There’s live music playing, friends catching up, coworkers taking a break, families grabbing a quick bite—it’s just a feel-good scene. And it’s one of those things that reminds me why I love covering the Stateline area. Events like this aren’t flashy or over-the-top… they’re local, real, and centered around community. So if you’re ever wondering what to do on a Friday lunch hour in Beloit, this is it. Whether you work nearby, live in the area, or are just visiting, Fridays in the Park is an easy way to support local businesses, hear some live music, and enjoy a little sunshine in the middle of your day.I'll definitely be there for a few of these Fridays—camera in one hand, taco in the other. If you see me, say hi! And as always, keep showing up for these awesome local events. That’s what keeps the Stateline strong. 💛

Breakfast Done Right at Nora’s Place in South Beloit

Breakfast Done Right at Nora’s Place in South Beloit

There’s just something about a good skillet that hits different in the morning—and Nora’s Place in South Beloit delivered exactly what I didn’t know I needed today.I ordered the chorizo skillet, which came loaded with perfectly grilled hash browns, red and green peppers, and a couple of eggs on top—just the way I like it. I added a little hot sauce on the side, and that kicked it up just enough. The peppers had that beautiful grilled flavor, not soggy or overdone—just right. I've been trying to eat healthier lately, and this was one of those rare meals that felt indulgent and clean. It was satisfying but didn’t leave me feeling weighed down. Honestly, I walked out feeling better than when I walked in.If you’ve never been to Nora’s Place, it’s tucked right off Blackhawk Blvd, and it’s one of those diners that immediately makes you feel like you’ve been coming there for years—even if it’s your first time. It’s cozy, casual, and full of friendly faces. The service is quick, the coffee is strong (and worth a mention), and there’s that laid-back hometown vibe that just makes the food taste better.Nora’s has been a staple in the community for a while now, known for hearty American breakfasts, comforting lunches, and generous portions. Beyond the skillet, they’ve got everything from fluffy pancakes and French toast to thick Angus burgers and steak sandwiches. There’s even a fun kid’s menu if you’re bringing the family. So if you’re looking for a solid breakfast spot that feels like home and leaves you full in the best way, Nora’s Place should be on your list.

Finding Magic in Downtown Beloit: Nine Bells & Cat Tails

Finding Magic in Downtown Beloit: Nine Bells & Cat Tails

Every time I step into Nine Bells & Cat Tails, I’m reminded why I do what I do.Owned by Karen Koyama, Nine Bells & Cat Tails isn’t just a metaphysical shop—it’s a sanctuary for the soul. Karen’s “why” runs deep. As a veteran, a woman, and a spiritual healer with roots in Nichiren Buddhism, she created this space to help others reconnect with themselves, with their purpose, and with the energy around them. Her journey as a psychic medium for over 14 years is reflected in every shelf, every handmade incense stick, every crystal that seems to hum with its own story. But it’s more than just crystals and candles. Karen offers a wide range of services that invite people to explore their own intuition and personal growth. From tarot readings (just $1 a minute!) to henna tattoos, to psychic development classes and special events like Crystal Ball Fridays with Johnathan Woods—Nine Bells is all about connection. Whether you're just getting curious about metaphysics or have been on a spiritual path for years, something is grounding and inspiring about this space.Karen also pours her heart into the community through music. With the Dolce Music Academy (right in the same building), she teaches piano, drums, strings, and more, alongside a team of musicians who also instruct at Beloit College and local schools. It’s a rare blend of healing, creativity, and education all under one roof.I also want to take a moment to say thank you to Karen and Nine Bells & Cat Tails for being a proud sponsor of Stateline Buzz. Their support means the world to me—and honestly, this positivity movement, the free articles, videos, and features that I share with the community wouldn’t be possible without partners like them. Businesses like Nine Bells are the heartbeat of the Stateline, and I’m grateful to have them in our corner. So if you haven’t yet, stop in and see the magic for yourself. You might just walk out with more than you came in for—a little more peace, clarity, or maybe even purpose.

Beloit College Class of 2025: Honoring Tradition, Embracing the Future

Over the weekend, Beloit College celebrated a significant milestone as the Class of 2025 crossed the stage, marking the culmination of years of dedication and growth. The commencement ceremony, set against the backdrop of the college's historic campus, was a testament to the resilience and achievements of its graduates. Family, friends, and faculty gathered to honor the students' journeys and the bright futures that lie ahead.Beloit College, established in 1846, holds the distinction of being Wisconsin's oldest continuously operated college. Founded by a group of New England pioneers known as the "Friends for Education," the institution was envisioned as a beacon of learning in the then-Wisconsin Territory. The first building, Middle College, was constructed in 1847 and remains a central fixture on campus today. Throughout its history, Beloit College has been at the forefront of progressive education. In 1895, it became coeducational, and in 1904, Grace Ousley became the first African-American woman to graduate from the college. Situated within the Near East Side Historic District, it features 20 Native American mounds, including a turtle effigy that has become an unofficial symbol of the college. These mounds, built between 400 and 1200 A.D., serve as a poignant reminder of the region's rich indigenous heritage. As the Class of 2025 embarks on their next chapters, they carry forward the legacy of a college deeply rooted in tradition yet continually evolving.
